Connect – Ignite – Renew, Universities talk Sustainability

Balance Carbon has extended on its proud history of membership with the Australian Campuses Towards Sustainability (“ACTS”) with its sponsorship of the 2016 Annual Conference. Under the headline of “Connect – Ignite – Renew” Balance Carbon were both an active conference participant and inspired attendee at this year’s conference.Balance Carbon’s Helen McCarthy presented in conjunction with the University of Tasmania, Charles Sturt University and the Federal Government Department of Environment and Energy on the University sector’s journey towards carbon neutrality. Balance Carbon has assisted both Universities in preparing their initial application for carbon neutrality and the session provided feedback to other interested institutions on the challenges, processes and learnings in seeking certification as carbon neutral under the National Carbon Offset Standard.

Matthew Shorten presented on the opportunities for Sustainability Data Faster with the University of South Australia. This presentation focussed on the evolution of sustainability reporting from ad hoc reports produced annually, through excel spreadsheets and finally reporting and data management with Trellis. This session was very well attended and demonstrated efficiencies and opportunities in moving towards digital data capture and software based reporting for large complex institutions like Universities.

Over the three days, thought provoking sessions inspired conference participants to do more at their individual institutions for the environment and to promote their efforts, whilst reflecting on the challenges in the sector.

As always a highlight of the conference were the Green Gown Awards. Balance Carbon’s clients were nominated for five awards out of the ten with Charles Sturt University winning the “Carbon Reduction” category for their carbon neutral certification (read more about this here) and the University of Tasmania winning the “Built Environment Category. Balance Carbon would like to congratulate the winners across all categories for their outstanding efforts a full list of which can be found here.
